Best time to visit Miami
Miami is warm most of the year, but the experience changes a lot by season — from prices and crowds to heat, humidity and storms. Here's how to pick the right time for your trip.
Weather and seasons
Winter (December to April) is Miami's dry, mild high season: warm days, low humidity and little rain — the most comfortable stretch for sightseeing and the beach. Summer (June to September) is hot, very humid, and brings short, heavy afternoon thunderstorms most days.
Ocean temperatures stay warm nearly year-round, so swimming is comfortable in almost any month.
High season vs low season
High season runs roughly December through April, when snowbirds and northern travelers fill hotels and rates climb, especially around the winter holidays and spring break in March. Summer is technically low season for hotel rates despite the heat, since it overlaps with hurricane season.
The best value is usually in the shoulder months — May and late September to November — when rates soften, crowds thin out, and the weather is still workable.
Hurricane season
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June to November, with the highest activity in September and October. Direct hits on Miami are infrequent but possible; if you travel in those months, watch the forecast, consider travel insurance, and look for a flexible (refundable) rate.
Art Basel and Miami Music Week
Art Basel Miami Beach, held in early December, and Miami Music Week / Ultra, held in late March, are two of the city's biggest annual events — expect packed hotels, premium rates and a livelier-than-usual scene during both. Book well ahead if your trip lines up with either.
The short answer
For the best all-round conditions, aim for December to April. For the best balance of good weather and lower prices, target May or the second half of October and November. Book a refundable rate if you're traveling during hurricane season.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest month to visit Miami?
Late summer (August and September) tends to be the cheapest — low season, fewer crowds — though it's also peak hurricane season and very hot and humid, so a refundable rate is worth it.
Does it rain a lot in Miami?
Winter and spring (December–April) have little rain. From June through September, short, heavy afternoon thunderstorms are common but usually pass within an hour, leaving the rest of the day clear and steamy.
