Miami airport transfers and getting around

Miami International Airport (MIA) is one of the busiest airports in the country and the main gateway to the city. Sorting out your transfer in advance makes arrival smooth — here's what to know.

The airport and travel times

From MIA it's roughly 20–30 minutes to Brickell or Downtown, about 25–35 minutes to South Beach depending on traffic, and around 20 minutes to Coral Gables or Coconut Grove. Traffic on the causeways to the beach can add significant time during rush hour, so build in a buffer.

Rideshare vs hotel shuttle vs rental car

Rideshare apps (Uber, Lyft) have a dedicated pickup area at MIA and are usually the fastest, most convenient option for solo travelers or couples. Some hotels offer a shuttle or can arrange a private transfer — worth asking when you book if you have a lot of luggage or arrive with a group. A rental car makes sense if you plan to explore beyond the immediate area, but note that South Beach parking and valet fees can add up.

Getting around once you're there

Miami is spread out and largely car-dependent, though Downtown and Brickell are served by the free Metromover people-mover, and South Beach itself is very walkable once you're there. Taxis and rideshare are widely available; expect metered taxi fares or app-based pricing rather than negotiated rates.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Miami airport to South Beach?

Around 25–35 minutes without heavy traffic, though rush hour on the MacArthur or Julia Tuttle causeways can extend that considerably — allow extra time if you're on a schedule.

Is Uber available at Miami International Airport?

Yes — rideshare apps have a designated pickup zone at MIA and are one of the most convenient ways to reach your hotel.
